Gardening in the Northern Neck of Virginia:  A Handbook for Responsible Gardeners (revised second edition) is now available.  The handbook explains what you should know to be a successful gardener in the Northern Neck.  Cost: $10

MISSION

     Northern Neck Master Gardeners (NNMGs) are trained volunteers who provide their community with research based gardening and horticulture information.  They receive training in all areas of horticulture from the Virginia Cooperative Extension (VCE) Service.  As educators for VCE, the Northern Neck Master Gardeners:

• Answer gardening questions in the local Extension Offices, at local fairs, libraries, and garden centers

• Diagnose plant, insect and disease problems

• Promote safe use of pesticides and fertilizers to protect water quality and the environment

• Instruct citizens in the community on proper care of lawns, trees, shrubs and vegetables

• Write newspaper articles, fact sheets and publications on gardening in the Northern Neck

• Conduct gardening programs for diverse groups for all ages in the community

• Create and help maintain teaching gardens in the community

The Northern Neck Master Gardeners were founded in 1989. 

In 2010, the Northern Neck Master Gardeners donated over 9,000 volunteer hours.

 HELP DESK

     From November through March, Northern Neck Master Gardeners answer gardening questions from 9 AM to Noon  in the Northumberland County Extension Office each Tuesday.    Questions from residents in Westmoreland County and Lancaster Counties will be forwarded to master gardener volunteers in Northumberland during these winter months.
